The Issues

Our political landscape has been dominated by the two-party system for too long, stripping power from the people and centralizing it in the hands of a few. As a U.S. Senator, my mission is to dismantle this status quo and restore the political power to the citizens of Iowa and the nation.

  • Both parties have worked tirelessly to take power away from the people and to concentrate it in their own hands. I am not running against a Democrat or a Republican; I am running against the two-party system itself.

As a U.S. Senator, I will work tirelessly to restore to the people of Iowa the political power that the parties have taken from them and to keep the national government out of the policymaking sphere our Constitution reserves for the states.

  • As a prosecutor, I have seen firsthand how our nation’s drug laws do more harm than good. The cost to taxpayers to investigate, prosecute, and incarcerate individuals for using marijuana far outweighs the benefits of these laws.

The very first bill I will introduce upon being elected to the U.S. Senate will be to decriminalize the possession and use of marijuana.

  • Congress should have no role in the regulation of abortion. As a U.S. Senator, I will work to uphold the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2021) that abortion policy is a matter reserved for the states under our Constitution.

  • Our nation’s immigration system is broken. Both parties are unwilling to work together and to acknowledge what is right about each other’s positions: a secure border and a humane immigration policy are not mutually exclusive.

I will fight for a secure border. I will also fight to raise or to eliminate artificial caps on the number of people who can legally immigrate to remove the pressure on our nation’s borders.

  • Our presidency has assumed imperial proportions. Presidents now make laws unilaterally through executive orders and executive agreements; members of Congress sit back and watch because they know leaving the difficult task of governing to the president enhances their reelection prospects.

As a U.S. Senator, I will fight to restore the constitutional balance of powers across the three branches of our national government, and to return the legislative power to Congress where it rightfully belongs.

  • Every president since Herbert Hoover has increased the national debt, and Republicans have been among the greatest offenders. George W. Bush grew the debt 105%; Donald Trump by more than 40%.

As a U.S. Senator, I will vote against every funding measure that would result in an increase in our national debt, except in cases of extreme national emergency. I will also fight for a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution to bring Congress within its limits.

  • Without private property, a free society cannot exist. The Fifth Amendment to the Constitution assumes property taken through eminent domain will be put to “public use.” In 2005, the Supreme Court incorrectly held that the government can seize property from private landowners and transfer it to private developers.

As a U.S. Senator, I will work to pass legislation prohibiting private companies from harnessing the coercive power of the state to seize property for commercial gain, ending eminent domain abuse in our nation.

  • Although the Constitution grants Congress the sole power to declare war, every war since World War II has been initiated by the president. Members of Congress have been all too happy to transfer the war-making power to the president, freeing them to campaign for reelection while sacrificing trillions of dollars and countless American lives.

As a U.S. Senator, I will fight to bring our men and women in uniform home, to block foolish wars declared by presidents without the consent of Congress, and to conserve our nation’s military strength for those rare occasions when our nation’s vital interests are truly at stake.
